What you'll learn
Critique is a skill you can train
Spotting problems quickly in a static screen is the foundation of design reviews and heuristic evaluations.
Placeholders are not labels
Placeholder text disappears while typing and often fails contrast. Use a persistent visible label.
Nielsen’s heuristics
Visibility of system status, error prevention and recognition over recall explain most common UI mistakes.
Spot the Flaw FAQ
What is a heuristic evaluation?
A heuristic evaluation is an expert review of an interface against recognised usability principles, such as Nielsen’s 10 heuristics.
Why are placeholder labels bad?
They vanish when the user types, strain memory, and usually have low contrast. A visible label above the field is more accessible.
