Figma has no built-in video export. Here's how to export a Smart Animate prototype from Figma to MP4, MOV, GIF, or WebM in seconds using the free Motionly plugin — no screen recording, full quality, exact frame timing.

Table of Contents

Short answer: Figma cannot export video on its own — there is no MP4 or GIF option anywhere in the app. To export a Smart Animate prototype from Figma to MP4, run the free Motionly plugin: select the first frame of your flow, choose MP4, set FPS and scale, and export. Motionly re-renders each frame of the transition, so you get a clean video with the exact timing of your prototype — no screen recording.

Export a Smart Animate prototype from Figma to MP4 with Motionly

Can You Export Smart Animate From Figma to MP4?

Not with Figma alone. Figma’s export menu only produces PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF. Prototypes — including Smart Animate transitions — play in Present mode in the browser, but there is no way to save that playback as a file from Figma itself.

To get an MP4, MOV, GIF, or WebM out of a Figma animation you need one of two things:

  1. A community plugin that reads your transitions and renders them to video (the clean way).
  2. A screen recording of Present mode (the lossy way — cursor, dropped frames, wrong timing, extra crop work).

This guide covers the plugin route with Motionly, which is free and purpose-built for exactly this.

How to Export a Figma Smart Animate Prototype to MP4

Watch the full walkthrough, or follow the written steps below.

Step 1 — Open your prototype

Open the Figma file with your Smart Animate flow. Make sure the frames are connected with prototype interactions and the transition is set to Smart Animate (not Instant or Dissolve) with your chosen easing and duration.

Step 2 — Select the first frame of the flow

Click the starting frame — the one the interaction fires from. Motionly walks the prototype graph from whatever you select, so selecting the first frame captures the whole sequence.

Step 3 — Run Motionly

Plugins → Motionly (or right-click → Plugins). Motionly opens and reads the Smart Animate transitions attached to your selection.

Step 4 — Choose MP4 and your settings

  • Format: MP4 (also available: MOV, GIF, WebM)
  • FPS: 30 or 60. Use 60 for fast micro-interactions.
  • Scale: 2× for crisp playback on retina screens and social.

Step 5 — Export and download

Click Export. Motionly renders each frame of the transition on the server and downloads a real .mp4 — no cursor, no recording, and the duration matches your prototype to the frame.

For anything you’ll put in a deck, a case study, Dribbble, or a client review, the plugin route is the one that looks professional.

Other Ways People Search for This

The workflow above is the same regardless of the phrasing:

  • Export Smart Animate from Figma → select first frame, Motionly, pick format.
  • Export Figma motion animation (Motion tab / Figma’s timeline animations) → Motionly also reads Motion-tab keyframes, not just Smart Animate.
  • Export animation from Figma to GIF → same steps, choose GIF instead of MP4.
  • Figma prototype to video → MP4 or WebM output covers this.
  • Export Figma animation to MP4 free → the free plan handles it; see limits below.

Is It Free?

Yes. Motionly exports GIF, WebM, and MP4 for free. The free plan allows 10 exports in any rolling 30-day window (it’s not a calendar-month reset — each export frees up 30 days after you use it).

Pro removes the limit entirely:

  • India: a low monthly subscription.
  • Everywhere else: a one-time one-month pass — pay once with PayPal or card, buy again whenever you need another month. No auto-renew.

Troubleshooting

My MP4 is only 1 second long

Older builds capped frames. On the current version, make sure your prototype’s transition durations and any hold/delay times are set correctly — Motionly exports exactly what the prototype timeline defines. If a flow is genuinely 6 seconds, you’ll get a 6-second MP4.

The animation looks static / nothing moves

The transition between your frames is probably set to Instant or Dissolve. Open the prototype connection and switch it to Smart Animate, then match layer names between frames so Figma knows what to tween.

Only part of my flow exported

Motionly starts from the frame you have selected. Select the first frame of the sequence, not a middle one.

Export is slow or times out

Lower the scale from 2× to 1× or drop FPS from 60 to 30 for very long flows, then re-export. Large multi-screen flows at 60fps/2× are the heaviest case.

FAQ

Can you export Smart Animate from Figma to MP4? Not with Figma alone — it has no video export. Use the Motionly plugin: it reads your Smart Animate transitions and renders them to MP4, MOV, GIF, or WebM.

Does Figma export video natively? No. Figma exports PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF only. Video needs a plugin or a screen recording.

How do I export a Figma prototype as a video without screen recording? Run Motionly, select the first frame of the flow, choose MP4, set FPS and scale, and export. The result has no cursor and matches your prototype’s timing exactly.

What formats can I export Figma motion to? MP4, MOV, animated GIF, and WebM.

Is it free? Yes — 10 exports per rolling 30 days on the free plan. Pro removes the limit.
